Good news from Berlin! From August 1, all Berlin school students can apply and get a free student travel card from BVG – Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe for zones A and B. School students can use all public transportation means for no cost and also in case of secondary trainees or young apprentices, an inexpensive subscription based travel card has been launched. This travel card costs 1 euro/day and a yearly card costs 365 euros.

How to apply for free student travel card?

If you already have a student ID, then it is automatically converted. If you don’t, then you must apply for a free card online here with a valid ID and a photo. If you haven’t obtained your card yet, you can travel for free with your existing student ID until the end of November.

 

What does the ticket include?

– The ticket is designed for school students aged 15 and above.

– Carrying bicycle is included

– The ticket is non transferable and you cannot take someone else along with you

– Valid for zones A and B for all public transport services (S-Bahn, U-Bahn, regional train, tram, ferry and bus).

– Ticket is automatically renewed until age 17 and after that, the student has to renew yearly presenting the renewal application and the valid student ID and other documents at the S-Bahn counter.

Students life can get expensive very quickly. But don’t  worry as you are a student and there are several ways to save the money. It comes with its perks. There are student discounts available on transport, movies, events, museums, food, applications, banks, online shopping, etc. 

You just need to your student ID to avail these offers. Don’t forget to carry it always. 

Amazon Prime

As a student you can get one year free Amazon Prime student membership if you have a valid student e-mail address. You can cancel your membership just after activating it, so you will not be charged after one year. Nevertheless, after the free membership you will get a 50% discount on your Amazon Prime Students account.

As a prime member you will also get a higher starting bonus (50-70€) on your free Amazon Visa Card.

Entertainment 

You can avail a student discount in movies, events, sports events and museums. 

In theaters like CineStar and IMAX, you can always ask for student discounts while booking the ticket and in some theaters, they have fixed days for the student discounts. Don’t forget to get the free Cinestar card in which you can collect points for all movies. You might get a free ticket once you reach a certain limit. Sometimes, O2 also offers Kino Tuesdays, through which you get 2 tickets for one price. 

Museums

If you are really into history, just Berlin alone has 170 museums. You can get a museum card for all public museums worth 25 euros and it is for a year and you can go as many times as you want. Even if you travel outside Germany, while entering museums or dom/cathedral, just ask for student discount. Every place has a discount of minimum 1-2 euros.

Urban Sports Club

As a student you can get a 10€ discount on your Urban Sports Club (USC) membership. You just need to send them you “Immatrikulationsbescheinigung” after getting one of their memberships and they will reduce your monthly fee. You can cancel your membership any time and if you register through this link you will also get a 30€ discount on your third month.
