If you are newcomer to Germany, it is very important to know the emergency numbers and keep it handy in case of any problems. The federal office for civil protection and disaster assistance has listed important emergency services for Germany here

Some  primary emergency services in Germany are

  1. Rettungsdienst: Emergency Medical Service
  2. Polizei – Police
  3. Feuerwehr – Fire service

In case of medical emergencies, one must go to Notaufnahme – Emergency Department of hospitals.

112 – Pan European Emergency number

In case of any medical problems, crimes, life-threatening situations, fire incidents, etc, you should call 112, which is usually directed to the appropriate local fire service or emergency service (Rettungsdienst).

110 – Police

Calling 110 can be used to direct your call the nearest police station in case of emergencies. Alternatively, you can also find police officials in busy streets or their cars on the road (Polizei), if you need some help.

Please note that you might have to add prefix for some numbers according to your state. (Berlin, Brandenburg: 030, Saarland: 06841, Niedersachsen: 0551, Bremen, Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein, Hessen, Rheinland-Pfalz: 06131,Baden-Württemberg: 0761, Bavaria: 089, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Sachsen, Sachsen Anhalt, Thüringen: 0361, Nordrhein-Westfalen: 0228)

Lost your bag in bus or train?

If you have lost your bag or valuables in train or bus, you can contact the Fundbüro or nearest transport office (for example in Aachen – ASEAG, Berlin – BVG, Mainz – MVG).

Emergency in Autobahn

In case if you have an emergency on the  Autobahn, try to get to the nearest yellow emergency phone booth if you do not have access to your mobile, park your car in the sideway or parking stops, turn on your emergency lights and keep the warning triangle on the road to intimate others. Stopping at an Autobahn without a real emergency situation is illegal.

Lost passport

If you have lost your passport, you might immediately give a complaint to the police. Some of the links of embassies in Germany are:

Appointment with Doctor

In case you are ill and want to get an appointment with a doctor, you can call the nearest Hausarzt and explain the issue to get an appointment immediately. In some cases, the doctors might not have slots and in some cases, you might have to speak in German to book an appointment.
