World war II (WWII) Bombs still a threat to the German cities. I have been living in Berlin for the last 2 years now. Barely a month goes by without news of a WWII bomb and its effect on the citizens.
It’s been 74 years since WWII and the threat of these bombs is still as scary as it was back then.
Today, Thursday 13 June 2019, two 250-kilogram World War II bombs will be defused in Oranienburg a city of over 40,000 residents just outside Berlin. These bombs were found two years ago and are planned to be defused.
A barricade circle is created of around 1000 metres. It is estimated that approximately 9500 residents will be affected. There is going to be a lot of inconvenience as the main station, several Kitas and schools, as well as a care home, will be temporarily closed, likely until 5 pm. As the main station is closed, it will be affected as well. The S-bans and the regional traffic will be a problem, so separate bus services are set up for the S-Bahn between Oranienburg and Birkenwerder.
If the bombs could not be defused, a consideration to explode them is also an option, the city announced. This is the situation that Germany is still facing almost every other month in every other city. Recently, world war bombs were found in Frankfurt and Essen. A few months ago, a bomb was also found in Berlin near the main central station.
These moments are horrifying as it was 74 years ago.
